Competition for jobs in professional services
Leading professional services firms have already been swamped with graduate applications for 2012.
Ernst & Young has received more than 3,200 applications for fewer than 800 jobs; in practice, and allowing for interns from summer 2011 already offered positions, there are only between 480 and 560 jobs available.
At KPMG they have received 7,200 applications for 850 jobs between 1st July and 1st November. By comparison last years applicants for the same period were 4,500.
PwC, which says that it is seeking to hire 1,200 graduates, has said that applications have risen by 90% and Deloitte has indicated that it has experienced a similar increase in applications.

Increased Competition for places at PwC
One in three of PwC’s new graduate Spring intake graduated in 2008 and 2009, according to the professional services firm.
The firm says most of the intake for the 209 available places were from graduates who graduated last year.

Is some work experience more equal than others?
The number of graduates with good grades is rocketing and employers, unable to distinguish between candidates on academic grounds, are looking for something extra on the CV. Professor Peter Hawkins, a graduate employment expert at Liverpool University, has said that work experience is now “absolutely crucial” for young people. He describes a degree as “no longer a meal ticket to people’s future – it’s merely a licence to hunt.” Continue Reading »
