It is not unreasonable for any company to recruit candidates who are not only well qualified but who look and sound appropriate. It seems to me that if people who are not from an upmarket background want to work for an upmarket brand they need to make themselves acceptable. The solution is in a candidate's own hands - learn how to speak, behave and dress in a way that fits in with the image the company wants to project. If you are not prepared to do that, you probably wouldn't be happy working for the company anyway.

There are too few engineering entry positions. The problem is that engineering companies are not prepared to spend time and money training graduates for a particular job role. Also any skills gained from University that would qualify someone to do the job, an employer would not value it unless those skills were gained in a job.
There is no excuse for companies to complain of a shortage of skills in a workforce as they can train. When they complain that they can’t find the people what they are in fact saying is that they don’t want to spend money and time training and/or they don’t want to pay the going rate for those skills. I guess they don’t have to if they can get people from EU or none EU countries. So the local work force won’t get trained and so there is a shortage of skills.
I do believe that the numbers of engineering graduates are too high. The market is saturated. Many Engineering graduates can’t get jobs and so are forced to work in other sectors. An engineering degree is considered worthless after two years of not working in an engineering sector. Also there is little flexibility in the engineering job sector. If you worked in a particular engineering sector for example as a manufacturing engineering you won’t be permitted to transfer into, for example a CAD job even though you have the skills.

I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the media would have us believe. Tenacity and patience still pay off and presumably, those are qualities that graduates have acquired if they've achieved their degree.

My sister graduated last year with a 2:2. As far as her university was concerned, she would never get a job with that grade in this climate. And she proved them wrong and took great pleasure in doing so. Kick-starting graduate careers has gotten harder, there's no doubt about that but if you're patient, flexible, tenacious and you don't believe what the media's telling you, you'll be ok.

Well, at the end of the day, we can only do what we're motivated to do and, for me, that involves getting a job. Us graduates have to be less choosey but a bit more circumspect about what we want to do with our future.
